The story is post covid19 and people are still scared of any kind of outbreak。 The case is puzzling and may have ties to the case she is working。This is the first book by Kathy Reichs I have read and I loved it even without having read the previous books in the series。 I really want to go to the beginning and read them all from start to finish now! 。。。more

Reichs can still pull it out of the bag。It’s hurricane season and as ever Tempe, who lives between Charlotte in North Carolina and Montreal, is always in the wrong place when the hurricane strikes。 As the book opens Tempe is in North Carolina with her cat Birdie, and missing her partner, retired Montreal Homicide Detective, Andrew Ryan。Tempe is cleaning up in Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office, ready to head home before the hurricane hits when an elderly woman asks for her。 She has a find for Tempe – pictures of a woman, including a death mask, which the woman believes may belong to a long gone relative。Then, post hurricane, two bodies are washed up on the South Carolina shore。 They are badly decomposed and have been sealed in a medical waste container。 Wrapped in plastic, they are badly decomposed。 Each has received a single bullet to the head, and each is missing teeth and fingers, rendering identification almost impossible。 These bodies stir a memory within Tempe’s brain and she recalls an old case in Quebec some 15 years ago, which mirrors this discovery。 That case was never solved。 Fortunately she has Ryan to call on to help her investigate。While Tempe is investigating these bodies, she asks Anna, her high maintenance friend, to look into the death masks case。 All the while, hovering in the background in news reports and conversations, is the knowledge that there is an ongoing outbreak of something called capnocytophaga (capno) which manifests itself first in dogs who then pass it along to humans on whom it has a devastating impact。 As yet there is no cure and this is a growing problem。Coming on top of the CoVid virus, this may be tough reading for some, but Reichs has highlighted here something that we should, at the very least, be aware of。 While we marvel at the way that scientists have managed to come up with a vaccine to help us deal with CoVid, so we should be aware that now that we have the knowledge of how to tackle such viruses, there will always be those who seek to use that knowledge unscrupulously。 The whole issue of gene editing and virus management is one that will not go away and as a society we should be learning as much as we can in order to engage in the debate around the ethical issues before it is too late。On the other hand, I’ll be interested in how this book is received in America, where the vaccine programme is meeting resistance and all efforts are pointed to making sure people understand how safe it is。 The timing of this book will certainly make for some interesting debates, I reckon。 At the very least, I know understand better than I did before just why they ask me if I’m allergic to eggs before I get my flu jab! This is Tempe’s narrative and we follow her as she travels between North Carolina and Montreal working primarily on the bodies in the barrel case, while she asks Anne to do some research on the death masks。Working with the Charleston Police and in particular with Detective Tonia Vislovsky, a policewoman whose modus operandi is brusque and unforgiving, the pair set out to find out who these women are, how they link to the cold case of 15 years ago and who the killer is。 As they travel together they reach an understanding which shoukd stand them in good stead for future investogations。Reichs weaves the science and the personalities together very well and the small personal details and tinges of humour peppered through her relationships with Anne, Ryan and of course her most important relationship with Birdie, help to keep the science just one part of this complex human equation。Verdict: The pace is good, the plot is highly topical and nicely woven as Tempe once more gets the dead to give up their secrets and help her to solve the case。 There are references to Tempe’s brain tumour that was the focus of her last book, mirroring Reich’s own experience, but fortunately that seems to be in the past and we hope it stays that way so that we can enjoy Book 21! 。。。more

I am ashamed to say that this was my first Kathy Reichs book, however it will not be my last。 This was a thriller with a difference, focusing on the forensics of an investigation, something which I find really interesting。 While I wouldn’t say the culprit of the crime came as any great surprise, the process of proving it was fascinating。 I also really liked the way that the author gave the protagonist a breakthrough but left it to a page or two later to reveal what it was to the reader。 This mad I am ashamed to say that this was my first Kathy Reichs book, however it will not be my last。 This was a thriller with a difference, focusing on the forensics of an investigation, something which I find really interesting。 While I wouldn’t say the culprit of the crime came as any great surprise, the process of proving it was fascinating。 I also really liked the way that the author gave the protagonist a breakthrough but left it to a page or two later to reveal what it was to the reader。 This made it feel like there were mini cliff hangers throughout the story, adding to the sense of intrigue。 I loved all of the characters and the banter and interactions between them。 Even though this was the 20th book about the main character, it felt like a standalone and I did not feel as if I was missing out on any prior knowledge, as there was always a brief explanation of background, history and relationship between the characters。 I would not hesitate to read another Kathy Reichs novel and may well go back and read the previous nineteen。This was a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I think I have to hold my hands up from the off and state that I am a massive fan of Kathy Reichs。 A copy of every Temperance Brennan novel sits on my bookshelves and I am always eagerly awaiting the next in the series。 Whether that makes me predisposed to enjoy one of her books or have higher expectations of her writing that someone who hasn’t been invested in Temperance’s story since the beginning, I don’t know, but I’ve tried my hardest to be as dispassionate in this review as possible。As wit I think I have to hold my hands up from the off and state that I am a massive fan of Kathy Reichs。 A copy of every Temperance Brennan novel sits on my bookshelves and I am always eagerly awaiting the next in the series。 Whether that makes me predisposed to enjoy one of her books or have higher expectations of her writing that someone who hasn’t been invested in Temperance’s story since the beginning, I don’t know, but I’ve tried my hardest to be as dispassionate in this review as possible。As with every Kathy Reichs novel, we are thrown straight into the action with Tempe in Carolina, facing the imminent arrival of Hurricane Inara, when she is sought out by a woman wanting help establishing if a death mask features the face of her long-missing great aunt。 Soon after, the storm washes up a medical waste container on the Carolina shore containing two decomposed bodies。 When Tempe is asked to examine them, the details of the case ring alarming bells with bodies discovered in Canada years before。 On top of all this, a flesh-eating virus has broken out…If this all sounds like a lot to contend with, remember that we also have to factor in the fact that Tempe’s time and career is divided between South Carolina and Montreal, and there is her ever-complicated relationship with Andrew Ryan to contend with to。 This book has the potential to become extremely complicated, but the genius of Kathy Reichs writing is that she manages to convey a lot of detailed plots and information in a way that is vey easy to follow and pull together complex and diverse storylines to form a coherent and nail-biting plot without seemingly breaking a sweat。 This is why die-hard fans such as myself keep returning to her books and these characters after two decades, and why I have never yet been disappointed。I couldn’t wait to get started on The Bone Code and, as soon as I dove in, I was back in Tempe’s world like I had never left, greeting all the characters like old friends (How have you been, Birdcat? I’ve missed you and your foibles) and desperate to catch up on what they have all been doing。 How is the shift in dynamics between Ryan and Tempe working out since the last book? How is his new career going? Where is Katy now? These are all things I want to know, as well as what is going on in the latest cases。 I love the fact that Tempe’s personal life is so inextricably wound into the narrative of these stories, as well as her work, since both make her fundamentally who she is and why we love her so much。As for the plot, I keep waiting for one of these books to fall short – Kathy must be running out of ideas by now surely? – but I am delighted to say this doesn’t happen in this book。 Quite how she manages to join together such diverse topics into a seamless, related narrative always amazes me, and I was hooked from start to finish。 I was a little dubious about reading about a flesh-eating virus whilst we are still dealing with the Covid pandemic but Kathy’s writing is so engrossing that I soon forgot all about what was happening in the real world and was completely immersed in this one。 I was on the edge of my seat all the way through, the pacy narrative and excellent writing carrying me along, even the complex medical and legal jargon causing a stumble, reading it in record time, and I was sad when it was over and I have to wait another whole year for the next one。Kathy has knocked it out of the park again with The Bone Code。 Fans of her books will de delighted with the latest instalment。 If you have never read a Temperance Brennan book, be warned, this book will get you hooked。 。。。more

Wow!For someone who has never heard of Kathy I was very cautious when picking this up。 I loved the sound of it and it suited my need for a new crime book。 I defiantly didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did。 Wow!For someone who has never heard of Kathy I was very cautious when picking this up。 I loved the sound of it and it suited my need for a new crime book。 I defiantly didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did。 。。。more

We’ve been fans of Kathy Reich’s Temperance Brennan for a long time and it’s a huge pleasure to meet her again in The Bone Code, her twentieth outing。 It’s rather like catching up with an old friend。Set between South Carolina and Montreal predominantly, here we find the forensic anthropologist living in a post pandemic world。 She’s pulled back into the past when she’s called in by the Charleston coroner to consult on a case。 Two bodies have been found in a container that’s washed up to shore dur We’ve been fans of Kathy Reich’s Temperance Brennan for a long time and it’s a huge pleasure to meet her again in The Bone Code, her twentieth outing。 It’s rather like catching up with an old friend。Set between South Carolina and Montreal predominantly, here we find the forensic anthropologist living in a post pandemic world。 She’s pulled back into the past when she’s called in by the Charleston coroner to consult on a case。 Two bodies have been found in a container that’s washed up to shore during a savage storm。 The method of the deaths and injuries to the bodies bring to mind a case Brennan was involved in years before in Quebec, so much so that she flies to Montreal to convince the authorities there to reopen the investigation。Although we’re post Covid in the book, capnocytophaga, a flesh-eating bacterium, is spreading rapidly through Charleston, thus further ramping up the tension。 Against this background, Brennan, aided by old love Andrew Ryan, works to try to solve the new case and discover how it links to the Canadian case, fifteen years before。 And then there's the question of the bacterium: where, if anywhere, does that tie in? Questions, questions…There’s a lot of technical detail in this book – as expected given Reich's impeccable credentials and background as an internationally respected forensic anthropologist – and there are several plot threads to follow, but diehard fans of the author, Brennan and her peers won’t be disappointed。 We weren’t。 Highly recommended。See: https://www。theliteraryshed。co。uk/rea。。。Thanks to the publisher for supplying a review copy。 All opinions are our own。 All rights reserved。 。。。more

The Bone Code is #20 in the Temperance Brennan series, it can also be read as a stand-alone。This starts with a hurricane, as it begins Tempe meets an old woman who asks her to find out what happened to her aunt who went missing many, many years ago。 The only clue is a death mask which is the exact image of this old lady, her sister and even her grandmother,After the storm, Tempe visits her friend Anne, but then receives a call from the local coroner, a shipping container has washed up on the bea The Bone Code is #20 in the Temperance Brennan series, it can also be read as a stand-alone。This starts with a hurricane, as it begins Tempe meets an old woman who asks her to find out what happened to her aunt who went missing many, many years ago。 The only clue is a death mask which is the exact image of this old lady, her sister and even her grandmother,After the storm, Tempe visits her friend Anne, but then receives a call from the local coroner, a shipping container has washed up on the beach, with two bodies inside。 Tempe’s heart drops as it reminds her of a similar case from years ago…And so the story begins…This is Tempe at her very best, a cold case, new bodies and a missing aunt, along with her relationship with Ryan and her cat Birdie, all the while dealing with the dead and their secrets。 Plenty of medical details told in Tempe’s unique, matter of fact way, this is a marvellous read, lots of tension, a clever and twisty plot。 So utterly compelling from start to finish。 I loved every minute。Thank you to Random Things Tours for the opportunity to be part of this blog tour, for the promotional material and an ARC of The Bone Code。 。。。more
Danielle Amor,
I haven’t read anything by Kathy Reichs before and then discovering that this was the 20th Volume of the Temperance Brennan Series I was a bit apprehensive that I had no idea what had happened previously and was going to be missing something。 That was totally unfounded, and this can most definitely be read as a stand alone novel! This is a non-stop story that keeps you invested all the way to a gripping climax! I really enjoy forensic science type stories, so this really ticked the boxes。Although I haven’t read anything by Kathy Reichs before and then discovering that this was the 20th Volume of the Temperance Brennan Series I was a bit apprehensive that I had no idea what had happened previously and was going to be missing something。 That was totally unfounded, and this can most definitely be read as a stand alone novel! This is a non-stop story that keeps you invested all the way to a gripping climax!
